The protagonist receives a signal from space ( “Love Song For The Hopeless”) and, convinced that the sender is the love of his dreams, takes off to track down the source, leaving just his preparations behind for his friends (“Maps of Mars”). At the beginning of his journey, Our Hero is sad at his departure but hopeful for the future (“Long Night’s Journey”). Meanwhile, his friends think about him often (“Absent Friends”) as they deal with rising temperatures on Earth. After so long alone, though, Our Hero begins to despair of ever reaching his goal, and begins to doubt his convictions (“Lost In The Phantom Zone”). Back on Earth, an expanding sun has begun to create panic, which is handled in different ways (“End Of It All Waltz”). Our Hero, after his nearly unbearable experience, finally reaches the source of the signal (“Starshine”), who stuns him by wondering why he’s alone and insisting they return to Earth immediately. On the remains of the planet, one man describes his surroundings and his options (“Solitary Man Blues”). Upon returning to an lifeless planet, Our Hero realizes that the “hopeless” in the signal referred to all humans, not just him (“How It All Ends”), and he grimly faces his future (“All The Time In The World”).
